Anthony Okozi, 69, of Upper Marlboro, began working for the agency in June 2021, in preparation for retirement early next year, AAA officials said.
Okozi was struck by Joseph Anderson, 21, of Rockville, late Tuesday, July 5 while helping a disabled Chevrolet driver who ran out of gas on the shoulder of Route 50, Maryland State Police said.
Charges were pending following the completion of the investigation.
"Okozi’s death illustrates why Slow Down, Move Over laws are critical to everyone’s safety," AAA said in a release. "The best thing drivers can do is move over and away from vehicles and people on the side of the road.
“Whether someone is fixing a tire or working on a tow, all motorists must slow down and move over a lane, if they can do so safely, to create more space for those working at the roadside. Their lives are on your shoulders."
